Happy Mothers Day 2024: History and significance of Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a special day celebrated to honor and appreciate mothers and motherly figures like grandmothers and aunts. It's usually observed on the second Sunday of May each year.

The tradition has roots in different customs. In the Middle Ages, people would visit their mothers on Laetare Sunday during Lent. In Britain, this evolved into Mothering Sunday. Later, in 1907, Anna Jarvis organized a Mother's Day Service in West Virginia to honor her late mother. This marked the beginning of Mother's Day as we know it.

Anna's idea spread quickly, and within five years, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state in the US. It became a national holiday in 1914, thanks to efforts by Anna and others.

The history of Mother's Day is deeply personal. Anna started it as a tribute to her own mother, who was an activist during the Civil War. After her mother passed away, Anna wanted to celebrate all mothers. She held the first Mother's Day event at St. Andrews Methodist Church, where she gave out her mother's favorite flower, carnations, to all the mothers present.

Anna's dedication to the idea led to Mother's Day becoming a widely recognized holiday. She campaigned tirelessly, writing to politicians and newspapers across the country. Eventually, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother's Day a national celebration.

Today, Mother's Day is a time for families to show love and appreciation for the mothers and mother figures who play such an important role in their lives. It's a day filled with flowers, cards, gifts, and most importantly, gratitude for everything mothers do.
